Stewarding the past since 1875.
782 New Hope Rd, Boyd, TX
Since it was established in 1875, New Hope Cemetery has been recognized as one of Parker County’s special landmarks. From the pioneer era through the present day, many prominent members of the community are buried here, and these cemetery grounds honor our rich history.
Steeped in History
In 1875, pioneer settler Joseph Wren and his wife Rebecca donated five acres of land to the community for the purpose of establishing a cemetery, a church, and a school. In 1876, a young girl named Mary Sudduth was buried in the cemetery for the first time. The church, which had been meeting in a log building (2 miles northeast), moved to the community land in 1875 as well. There was a schoolhouse located on the grounds of the burial grounds that was in use until the 1920s and is now part of the cemetery. An annual homecoming is held here each May.
A historical marker was erected in 1981 by the Texas Historical Commission to celebrate the long history of the New Hope Cemetery and New Hope Baptist Church. (Marker No. 3584.)
While being a separate entity from New Hope Baptist Church next door, the cemetery and church have maintained a longstanding friendly relationship. A pavilion was erected in the cemetery for outdoor services and graveside services. There have been many funeral services coordinated with the church next door, and many church members are plot owners at the cemetery.
The name “New Hope” was suggested by Mattie Brookshire. Mattie provided the money for the church bell through the sale of her chicken eggs. This was to summon the community to church, to put out a fire in what was then a very rural community, or to dig a grave.

Biannual Meetings
Throughout our efforts to encourage cemetery participation and upkeep, remember that we are primarily supported by donations and membership contributions. The New Hope Cemetery considers anyone buried in the cemetery or who has purchased a burial lot a member. We encourage participation and attendance at our two annual meetings, which are held the first Saturdays of May and November. The meetings are brief, address current concerns, and provide transparency of expenditures. We hope to see you at the next meeting! Afterwards, you are welcome to visit the cemetery and decorate a grave.
